Al Menshew has gone to the Golden Hills, Friday, Oct 9, in the A.M.

Al was Sid Blumner's Nameless and then SNGH 23 from 1988-89. Sid also asked for my and Al's help with finding information on 58 ,missing plaques for his plaque book. Al went out to find and send me photos of the plaques. I, in turn, filled out the forms and sent info to Sid. We became good friends after that. I'm gonna miss sitting next to him in VIP area of next upcoming 58 Doins, if we ever have one!

Robert "Doc" Chandler passed onto the Golden Hills on March 13, 2019.

Doc was an avid member of E Clampsus Vitus and one of the most knowledgeable Historians, and retired from Wells Fargo Bank. Whenever I needed help with ECV or other history, he always had the answers. He belonged to many other organizations, such as Westerners and Native Sons Of The Golden West. Bob was a unique historian - one with a tremendous sense of humor, wit and an uncanny ability to tell stories. His specialties were certainly the Express business, but also Gold Rush monetary systems and California in the Civil War. We all miss him!

This link will tell you so much more about this great man.

JIM "JR" REYNOLDS, XNGH TO THE GOLDEN HILLS

There is always a sense of loss when we learn of a Brother who has gone to the Golden Hills. It may cause a moment's silent reflection, a sudden loss for words, a tear or two, and of course a sad, wistful smile and involuntary nod of the head and small chuckle as we remember a particular funny moment we shared with our Brother. Each of us is going through these things now with the passing of our Brother Jim "JR" Reynolds. But, today, ECV itself weeps with the loss of Jim, who did so very, very much for our Order. So, whether you are a Cyber-Whanger or not, take a moment now to say "Thank you JR," and when next you Clamp, hoist one for and to Jim. He is now gone from the earthly Halls of our Ancient Order, but lives on in our hearts and memories. We are saddened by our loss but forever enriched for the times we had with him. Slippery Gulch will miss his hail! Vaya con Dios, Brother Jim. Peace on your Journey.

SNGH Glen Thornhill

John Zerfoss - Queho Posse #1919
It is with a heavy heart to announce the untimely passing of our brother John Zerfoss on July 29. John was a very active member of the Queho Posse. He reconstructed our monuments’ present form, which is in the shape of Nevada, and is now widely known throughout our territory. John was always one to help out when needed and a major part in the construction of our monuments. Nicknamed the “Badger” for his style in erecting the monument, John was always the first one on site when the form was removed. John took immense pleasure in a job well done. We have lost a fine Clamper and a very good and dear friend.

The hewgag sounds a mournful bray to announce that the following brothers of John P. Squibob Chapter #1853 have answered the clarion call and gone to the great diggins beyond the Golden Hills. Each will be missed, but certainly not forgotten…

William J. “Jim” Buckley Sr. (8/30/1937 - 6/17/2006)
Brother Jim received the ennobling Staff of Relief in 1975. A meat-cutter by trade, he also enjoyed gardening, fishing and desert camping. Jim is survived by his wife Paula Ann, son William J. “Jim” Jr., daughter Peggy Sue and numerous other family members.

Paul Dufresne (4/14/1950 – 12/19/2006)
Brother Paul arrived as a Squibob PBC in 1990. A pipefitter by trade, he loved to camp and looked forward to Squibob Clampouts throughout our territory. He is survived by sisters Suzanne, Cheryl and Jody, and also by brothers Fred, Mark, John and Michael.

William F. “Bill” Groscup (2/23/1941 – 2/22/2007)
Bill was a Squibob brother since 1997. He grew up San Pedro, and after a career with the Los Angeles County Fire Department retired in 1994. Along with his wife, Kris, Bill moved to Page, Arizona and lived there 4 years before moving back to north San Diego County. Despite a nine-year battle with cancer, Bill never let his illness get in the way of the things he loved to do -- house boating, 5th wheeling, dune buggies, body surfing, volleyball, and racquetball. He was a great friend to all that knew him. In additional to his wife, Bill is survived by his sons Erik and Kurt, sister Mary Keller, brothers Ben ‘Sonny”, Dick and Mike, as well as numerous other family members.

Richard H. “Rick” Tullis, MD FACS (5/12/1919 – 12/18/2006)
XNGH Rick Tullis, who found time to immerse himself in the roisterous assemblage that is Squibob Chapter, first came to our chapter as a PBC in 1969 and later served as Noble Grand Humbug in 1976. He was already by that time a renowned San Diego surgeon, serving as Chief of Surgery and as Medical Chief of Staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Dr. Rick helped to found the San Diego Ostomy Society, the San Diego Burn Center and the Society of General Surgeons. His community and volunteer activities included the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team, Visiting Nurses Association, the Sierra Club, San Diego Railroad Museum, Death Valley 49er's, and several other state and local historical groups in addition to E Clampus Vitus. He was a cheerful, optimistic, unassuming, gentle man; loved fishing in the Sierras with his kids, loved his years of surgery practice, and thanks to the medical expertise and care of his medical colleagues he had 30 years of borrowed time with us.

John P. Squibob Chapter, and all of Clamperdom, are richer for the time each of these fine brothers were able to spend amongst us.

David served as “Grand Noble Humbug“ for the Snowshoe Thomson Chapter, and was proud of his organization's care of “Young Widows and Old Orphans.“ David was an avid pilot, and loved his Beechcraft Bonanza. He was an accomplished mechanic and took care of his vintage Alfa Romeo. But David saved his greatest love and pride for his family. After a period of being single in Reno, David moved to Las Vegas to be with the love of his life, Deanna White.

David was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Devine and mother, Peggy Greenhalgh. He is survived by his brothers Dick Prouse and James Webb; son, Michael Devine and wife Rita of Salt Lake City, UT; Stacy Troutner and husband Brent, of Provo, UT; Kristin Hartt and husband Richard of Vienna, VA; and Erin White and husband Shannon of Wrightsville Beach, NC; and 22 grandchildren. He leaves behind his best friend and soulmate, Deanna White, of Las Vegas, NV. Known for a ready smile and quick humor, many friends will miss him. The family wishes to thank the Veterans Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the hospice nurses of CNS in Salt Lake City, UT for outstanding and compassionate care.

Services will be at the 27th East Ward Chapel (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) at 185 “P“ Street, in Salt Lake City, UT, with services beginning at noon, with a viewing in the preceding hour. He will be interred at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Services under the direction of SereniCare, funeral directors

Tom Boysen        Photo
BOYSEN, Tom (Bullwinkle)- Died peacefully November 9, 2006, surrounded by his family, of complications from a heart attack at the age of 58. He was a Sonoma County native, born in Petaluma, spending his youth in Penngrove. He has left many friends. He was someone that everybody seemed to like right from the beginning, and made everyone feel at ease no matter what the situation. His sense of humor and willingness to be goofy appealed to everyone.

Tom was an avid member of E Clampus Vitus, Sam Brannan #1004 "Hawker Extraordinaire" and really enjoyed going off in his trailer to the different doins. He would read anything that would sit still, his favorite author was Nevil Shute, but certainly not the only one. The walls at home are lined with books, and he read them all, some many times.

Tom worked at Reichardt Duck Farm for many years, and is deeply  missed by his co-workers. His widder Patti is blessed to have the support of family and friends with her during this awful time, and we were all blessed to have had him in our lives. We miss him more than we have words to say.

A gathering of clampers, friends and family will be held at the Burton Ave. Recreation Center, 7421 Burton Ave, Rohnert Park, on November 25, 2006, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please bring your favorite photos and stories to share. Red shirts please wear your clamp finest. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Red Cross, Hospice or a worthy cause of your choice.

Twigg Porter    Photo
Father Twigg Porter, SJ, XPBC has marched into the Golden Hills at 85.

A Redshirt filled with charisma, Twigg was a regular presence at many a Doins, and never bashful to imbue us with lighthearted flashbacks to his early childhood acting. Born in Ealing, England, George came to America by invitation of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. In the 1930's, he appeared as "Geordie MacKay" in films such as "Of Human Bondage", "David Copperfield" and "Oliver Twist".

A Jesuit for 66 years, Twigg was proud of his ECV connection, and never ever turned down a proper Manhattan or complimentary invite to YB-1 Doins. Twigg often stood with Emperor Norton at the Colma grave or gave invocations at the Jeremiah O'Brien and at Sarah Taylors grave up in West Marin. His enthusiasm for life carried over to "on call service" for the San Francisco Fire, Paramedics and Police departments.

Twigg also assisted the elderly and disadvantaged. In 1988, his vintage Chevy Nova registered over 310,000 miles, mostly responding to accidents, fires and his constant on the road travel to help parishes up and down the valley... this may even trump Chisler Don's ancient red "Flea" as he calls his traveling hawker goods car with its neat cow dents; ask him.

I, personally, spent many hours with Twigg, and consider him a true Clamper that would make St Vitus proud.

Lead the way to the righteous path, Twigg...and leave the lights on for us!

Wally Watkins, 1980 NGH #9,Tuleburg Ch.69
Wally passed to the Golden Hills this past weekend (Dec.10-11). He had just recently turned 85. It was told that Wally's kidneys gave out, but he was of sound mind up to the end. Wally will be buried in Truckee in the Spring, although the body has already been sent up to Truckee. As he was a Mason, the family is hoping that the local Masonic Lodge will allow them to use a room for a reception at the time of his burial. I asked Wally's son Patrick if he would mind if I passed the word of Wally's passing to his friends and admirers - he had no problem with that. Please pass the word accordingly. Patrick said that he would let me know when the burial will take place in Truckee and I will pass it along to the Brethern.
01/02/06

Update: Just received a phone call from Wally Watkins' son Patrick. He wanted to let me know that the family would be holding a memorial service for Wally this Sunday, January 15 at 11:00 AM at the Masonic Temple, 1123 J Street, Sacramento.  He said that the burial will take place in Truckee in July.

Also let me know that there was an article in the Sacramento Bee today about Wally. If you don't receive the Bee, I've attached the obituary from the Bee's website.

Hope some of you can make it. Patrick asked that we please pass the word on to Wally's friends with the hope that they might be able to attend the ceremony on Sunday.           Geno Fambrini

Another member of Chapter 1914 has taken the trip to the Golden Hills.

Tom worked for the local paper mill for 19 years & was abruptly thrown into the unemployed world when the mill shut down & went out of business. He went back to college for further training & studied to become a Biologist.

In July of 2004 he & his girlfriend moved to Mexico to build a new home in the foothills overlooking the pacific ocean near San Blas & the home was nearly complete when on October 26th Tom shot & killed himself & no one can figure out WHY. Tom was very well liked by everyone who knew him & had lots of friends so his death is a real mystery.

James Walling
Brother James "Captain" Walling entered the Golden Hills on Sept. 27th, 2005. His body was discovered 2 Oct.

Jim had been a good friend of mine for over 30 years. I sponsored him into ECV-YB1 about 3 years ago. While he did not attend many YB1 doins due to health and travel difficulties, he did attend doins closer to his home in the Delta/Sacramento area. He did make it clear he was proud to be a Redshirt and proud of YB1.

He was most interested in California and Western History and we traveled around checking out historical sites both in the Sierra and Nevada, The ghost town of Rhyolite in Nevada was one of his favorites.

Jim was a Naval veteran who served as a submariner during the Cold War, then worked as a railroader Jim Michigan before going to work with the phone company both in Michigan and California. He retired from the phone company after a career of 20+ years.

He held papers as a Captain issued by the US Coast Guard, was a avid sailor, and thus, his ECV nickname was also his title.

Rest in Peace, my friend and Brother                  Leon "Birdman" Abrams

Robert M. Wash
This may be a re-run for some of you, but Verne Cole informed me that Robert M. Wash, Charter member of Jim Savage Chapter 1852, and Humbug number 5 for the chapter in 1965 has passed on to the Golden Hills at age 97.

In 1987 we held TWaT day, (Tuschoff, Wash and Turner) day, honoring our then oldtimers, Elmer Tuschoff, Robert Wash, and Pop Turner for all the history they had imparted on us up to that time and for their dedication to spreading that history in the Valley....and they were all getting old and we didn't think they would be around much longer. They all fooled us. Pop lived to 100, Tusch to 98, and Bob Wash to 97. None of them were in a hurray to leave us.

Well that was 18 years ago and Bob Wash is the last of this trio to go to the Golden Hills. Collectively they represented almost 300 years of California history.

Robert Wash was also past County Counsel for the County of Fresno, and his names shows up in a lot of the historical articles written about Fresno and the Valley back in the 60's and 70's. There are very few of us that will ever attain the stature that Bob Wash did in historical circles here in the Valley. To steal from a former president, as a Clamper "it's the History, Stupid" and we should all remember that, it is the history that the Chapter represents and that this past Humbug Emeritus did us proud in.

The hewgag brays another mournful tune for our departed brother.....and an extra bray for a charter member.....

UPDATE:
I know I am getting this out short notice, but I was waiting to hear more. The services for Wash, founding member of Jim Savage Chapter 1852, will be Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Chapel of the Light, on Belmont Ave., just west of hi way 99, at 10:30am. The request has been made that red shirts be worn, but no vests or other decorations. The hew gag will be there and will be heard.
After looking through the archives, I discovered that our club was started in 1954 and 1955, and received it's Charter in 1959. For 50 years we have celebrated our history, and Mr. Wash was one who helped make it happen. I hope that many of you are able to attend, and I suggest that you bring cameras to record some photos of history being made. I have the feeling that many people will show up that will astound you...... Magoo

Jeffrey Lee Butler
Chapter Ten members are saddened by the untimely death of one of our most recent members.
Jeffrey Lee Butler, of Grass Valley, joined Chapter Ten at Hammon Grove in early May, 2005.
Shortly afterward, on May 20, he was burned in a propane explosion in his trailer, and spent several weeks in the burn unit at UC Davis Hospital in Sacramento before succumbing to his injuries.
The call for blood donations for Jeff was received around the first of June, and resulted in more than 25 pints of blood being donated for him by friends and strangers alike.
Jeff was not able to recover from his injuries, and went to the Golden Hills on June 17, 2005. He was employed in the parts department of Grass Valley Ford.                     Submitted by Tom Barry

Michael Jastremski
Michael "Yaz" Jastremski of Chapter 13 Joaquin Murrieta, also known as "Pimpco" in his later years, was born March 16 1963. I sponsored him to Joaquin Murrieta around April 2003 at Rowell Ranch, and I have never seen anyone more comfortable with his circumstances during his enlightenment. He was a born Clamper. He was many things, including a bonafied Rock Star with international notoriety. He was a surfer of life, moving wherever the cosmic tide took him and wherever he could find a little comfort and sustenance, always making friends an loving the womens all along the way. Anyone who knew him had their kitchen destroyed by him at one time or another, and anyone who knew anything never left him unattended in the vicinity of their outfit, lest he dismantle, destroy, and/or burn it down. He was a colorful character, our brother, and sometimes our unwitting leader. Our lives are a little bit less than they were now that he's gone.
Yaz entered another state of grace on the morning of May 23 2005 due to heart failure.
